Registering UIF for domestic workers has become an increasingly hot topic in the current labor climate. As the winds of change spread, the onus rests squarely on you, the employer, to ensure compliance and contribution.

Who must register for UIF and make contributions?

When you employ a worker who works 24 hours or more per month, you are obliged to register yourself as an employer of a Domestic Worker. Subsequently, you will also need to register your domestic worker as your employee. UIF for domestic workers is a statutory requirement which must be honored, both for the transparency of your working relationship and the protection of workers’ rights.

From April 2003 employers and their employees became liable for contributions to the fund.

If you employ a domestic worker you must be registered as an employer with the Department of Labour. If you employ more than one domestic worker (including gardeners, drivers and caretakers) you only need to register once.

How to register?
There are 4 ways to register:
  1. Submit the details on-line on the UIF website. Go to www.ufiling.co.za to register On-line. Apply for a password and a logon name. It will take about 48 hours for your password and logon name to be activated.
  2. Use form UI 8D to register as an employer and form UI 19-D (Step 4) to register your domestic worker. The downloaded forms can be completed and emailed to as an attachment to [email protected] .
  3. You can also contact the Department of Labour to fax the forms to you. Dial 086 712 2000 from your fax machine and follow the verbal instructions. The forms will be sent to your fax machine and you can fill them in and fax them back to 086 713 3000
  4. Post the completed forms to UIF, Pretoria, 0052
